Tennis was the scene of a new protest demonstration by an activist against global warming, after the semifinal of the last Roland-Garros. This Friday, September 23, a man entered the pitch at the O2 Arena during the Laver Cup match between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Diego Schwartzman, before setting his arm on fire. Wearing a T-shirt marked with the phrase ‘End Private Jets in the UK’, the activist was later evacuated from court.
This demonstration was short-lived, at the end of the first set. The London police confirmed in a press release the arrest of the man, as well as his hospitalization. His injuries are not life-threatening.
On June 3, an activist chained herself to the net on the center court of Roland-Garros during the semi-final between Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic, interrupting the match for several minutes. In recent months, various sporting events have been the subject of demonstrations for the protection of the planet, such as the Premier League and NBA matches, or even the last Formula 1 Grand Prix of Great Britain.
