Mondial Paris 2022 – Renault R5 Turbo 3E, the diamond explodes

Renault makes cars for everyone, but the diamond brand has been cultivating a certain art of more or less daring sports cars for many decades. If the current range of the French manufacturer unfortunately only includes the aging -but still very effective- Mégane RS for lovers of driving cars, Renault has dared in the past to sell machines as crazy as the Clio V6 (2000-2005) or, more recently, the extremist Trophy R versions of the Mégane. But in this long history of the most brazen Renaults, the 5 Turbo marketed between 1980 and 1985 has enough. Before definitively leaving Alpine on the sporting scene and as a final tribute to the fiftieth anniversary of the Renault 5, the brand lifts the veil this morning at the R5 Turbo 3E.

I do not see any connection with the future series electric Renault 5, expected for next year: this electric R5 has absolutely nothing compatible with the world of current city cars. Designed on the basis of a special tubular chassis, it has a body in the form of a “restomod” of the R5 Turbo 2. It measures just over four meters long but above all 2.02 meters wide due to its enlarged rear wings, approximately. the figure of a Lamborghini Aventador. The chassis weighs 980 kg, to which must be added the 520 kg of the lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 42 kWh, installed at ground level in the rear. The latter drives two electric motors, each of which drives a wheel on the rear axle, developing a total output of 380 horsepower for 700 Nm of torque. Are you scared for motor skills? Don’t worry, this little electric monster was specially designed to slide. Capable of shooting from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, it has a Drift mode and can steer its wheels through more than 50 degrees of angle like the specially prepared machines we see in specialized competitions.

The official press release includes a long passage dedicated to the design of the driver’s outfits and a model that will be dressed to parade alongside the R5 Turbo 3E at the Chantilly Concours d’Elegance this Sunday, September 25, but also to the NFT collection that Renault will offer to buy online. Renault tells us about “Web3”, blockchains and an adaptation to the “codes of its time”. Let me retain in all these basic elements of marketing language only one interesting element: the car can be driven virtually in video games. After Chantilly, the R5 Turbo 3E will be displayed on the Renault stand at the Paris Motor Show. And we, we dream of seeing Jean Ragnotti do something silly behind the wheel to see if he can take as much pleasure as with his old R5 Turbo…

Caradisiac, partner of the Paris Motor Show

As in 2018, Caradisiac is once again a partner in 2022 of the Mondial de l’Auto which will take place in Paris from October 17 to 23. Caradisiac’s editorial team will thus move to its own stand for the duration of the show to analyse, dissect, photograph and film all the new models. And this, of course, will also be an opportunity for you to come, as you are used to, to meet our journalists. What new or used car to buy? They will answer all your questions. Until then, we will give you in Caradisiac all the information that we have been able to obtain from the manufacturers about their new models.
