Ronald Araujo injured his right thigh in Uruguay’s defeat against Iran on Friday in a friendly played in Austria (1-0). The FC Barcelona defender will have to undergo surgery and will be out for almost two months. An absence for which the Catalan club will receive compensation from FIFA.
This international break has hurt the ranks of FC Barcelona. Memphis Depay and Frenkie De Jong were injured with the Netherlands, as was Jules Koundé with the France team. But the main file is about Ronald Araujo. The center-back was touched during Uruguay’s defeat against Iran, on Friday during a friendly in Austria (1-0).
Injured in the adductor of the right thigh, Araujo decided to have surgery. A choice supported by Barça, despite pressure from the leaders of La Celeste and especially from his coach Diego Alonso, who recommend that he undergo treatment to be able to play the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The 23-year-old rocker is scheduled to travel to Finland on Wednesday to be operated on the following day by Professor Lasse Lempainen, who has already worked on the recovery of Ousmane Dembélé and Sergi Roberto in recent years. The Catalan club then expects an unavailability of at least six weeks, which could reach two months (then the 2022 World Cup will have started).
Compensation from the 28th day of unavailability
An absence during which Barça will benefit from compensation from FIFA. As part of its club protection plan, approved three years ago and in force until December 31, the European body grants financial compensation to players injured during a match of their national team (in game or training).
Upon completion of the twenty-eighth day of unavailability, FIFA pays a per diem, with a cap of 20,458 euros, to the employer of the footballer who is in the infirmary. Its amount is calculated based on the player’s fixed salary, without taking into account variable bonuses. All this with a maximum total sum of 7.5 million euros per player and per injury. This compensation ends the day the player receives the green light from his medical staff to resume training.
